This artwork was born from the desire to give voice to a story often overlooked: the lives of young Pompeian girls destined for the cult of Isis. The inspiration comes from a book I wrote years ago (The prodigy of the sistrum from Ancient Pompeii) , in which I imagined the inner world of a child priestess offered to the temple at an age when her life was not considered as valuable or significant as that of men.
Many of these girls were dedicated to the goddess as an act of devotion or family strategy; others were forced into this path. They grew up in a world where their identity was sacrificed to a sacred role they had not chosen. Some embraced it with unwavering faith, finding in the cult a sense of belonging and spiritual strength. Others experienced it as a painful renunciation, a life shaped by duties that at times included ritual practices difficult to understand today, such as forms of “sacred prostitution,” part of a religious system where body, power, and spirituality were deeply intertwined.
I painted this figure to restore dignity to those silent lives: children who became women within the temple walls, suspended between devotion and obligation, between the sacred and the human. The artwork is a tribute to their invisible strength, to the complexity of their destiny, and to the memory of an ancient world that still speaks to us..
Quest’opera nasce dal desiderio di dare voce a una storia rimasta ai margini: quella delle giovani fanciulle pompeiane destinate al culto di Iside. L’ispirazione proviene dal libro che ho scritto alcuni anni fa, in cui immaginavo la vita di una sacerdotessa bambina, offerta al tempio quando la sua esistenza non era considerata importante quanto quella degli uomini.
Molte di queste fanciulle venivano affidate alla dea come atto di devozione o di convenienza familiare; altre, invece, erano costrette. Crescevano in un mondo dove la loro identità era sacrificata a un ruolo sacro che non avevano scelto. Alcune accettavano con fede incrollabile, trovando nel culto una forma di appartenenza e di forza spirituale. Altre vivevano quel destino come una rinuncia dolorosa, un’esistenza dedicata a un servizio che talvolta comprendeva anche pratiche rituali oggi difficili da comprendere, come la cosiddetta “prostituzione sacra”, parte di un sistema religioso che intrecciava corpo, potere e spiritualità.
Dipingo questa figura per restituire dignità a quelle vite silenziose: bambine diventate donne dentro un tempio, sospese tra devozione e obbligo, tra sacro e umano. L’opera è un omaggio alla loro forza invisibile, alla complessità del loro destino e alla memoria di un mondo antico che continua a interrogare il presente.
